Interesting information about the project

Norway features the world’s longest coastline with many bays and fjords. There are many islands along the coast, too. Not surprisingly, navigation there is as popular and intense as road traffic. The fuel demand for motor vehicles that travel on land and water is high. This applies both to mainland Norway and the dozens of islands along the sea coast.

Our customer has located its commercial fuel distribution facility one of these Norwegian islands. Due to the diverse project conditions, the two-compartment aboveground fuel tank had to be installed not only right on the shoreline, but also extremely close to nearby buildings. An additional curiosity of this project is that the facility needs to serve road vehicles and water vessels (including the craft operated by search and rescue services). All of this drove the specification of the fuel tank.

  • Firstly, it had to be protected by topcoating to minimise the risk of corrosion from salty sea air and water with a high concentration of sodium chloride.
  • Secondly, the limited clearance around the fuel tank necessitated a unusual solution consisting in the installation of the product refill pump and the fill box one by another along the fuel tank side.
  • Thirdly, due to the little space available, the customer required that the fuel tank was as short as possible without sacrificing the overall storage capacity. This resulted in the fuel tank diameter which is considerably larger than in other fuel tank assembles we build with comparable capacity.
  • Fourthly, to serve road vehicles, the delivery piping was ran to a fuel pump at the roadside; the delivery piping for water craft refuelling is connected to fuel distributors on the deck.

Other features include two fuel tank storage compartments (for gasoline and clear Diesel), a stainless steel pipeline and an interstitial leak detection system, complete with a mechanical overfill valve and a mechanical check valve. As is standard for our surface fuel tanks, this one is also provided with a ladder and a service platform on top.
