Underground fuel tanks – 60 m³ tanks for a filling station in Finland

Once the tanks have been manufactured and delivered, the next stage in the construction or modernisation of a filling station is their positioning and installation. The photos from Finland show this stage of the project, with our tanks already on site and becoming part of the station’s wider technological infrastructure.
For this project, we supplied two underground fuel tanks, each with a capacity of 60 m³. One tank was manufactured with two compartments and the other with three, allowing different types of fuel and AdBlue to be stored separately according to the requirements of the filling station.

Two 60 m³ underground fuel tanks

Both tanks have a diameter of 2,500 mm and were manufactured in accordance with EN 12285-1:2018. They are double-wall steel storage tanks equipped with an SGB DL 280 leak detection system for monitoring the interstitial space.
Dividing an underground fuel tank into separate compartments makes it possible to store several different liquids within a single steel structure. The number and capacity of the compartments are individually selected according to the requirements of each project and the planned technological layout of the filling station.
The steel storage tanks were also appropriately protected for underground installation. The external surface was coated with a 1,000 μm Endopren coating, while Steopox 270 was applied internally. The equipment also includes, among other components, 304L stainless steel anchoring straps, overfill protection devices, manholes and pipes manufactured in accordance with the project documentation.

Fuel tanks as part of the filling station installation

A fuel storage tank is one of the key components of a filling station, but it must work together with the rest of the installation. For this reason, already at the design stage we determine such elements as the position of pipes and manholes, piping layout, tank equipment, number of compartments and the required corrosion protection.
For this project, the design and equipment of the underground fuel tanks were selected according to the liquids stored in the individual compartments. The AdBlue installation was additionally equipped with a suitable suction pump.
Proper preparation is important not only during installation. Correctly matching all components of the tank and the surrounding infrastructure also contributes to safe and reliable operation over many years.

Why are underground fuel tanks designed as double-wall tanks?

A double-wall fuel tank makes it possible to continuously monitor the integrity of the tank. The space between the inner and outer walls serves as a monitoring space, allowing a leak in either wall to be detected.
This is particularly important for underground fuel storage tanks, as after installation the main body of the tank is located below ground level and is therefore not directly accessible for visual inspection. A leak detection system provides an additional means of monitoring the condition of the tank during operation.

From tank design to underground installation

Photos from the installation site show the final result of a process that began much earlier – from discussing the project requirements with the customer and preparing the design, through manufacturing and equipping the steel storage tanks, to their transport to Finland.
At Ekonstal, we combine the requirements of each individual project with our many years of technical and manufacturing experience. This allows us to supply underground steel tanks that are properly adapted to the entire installation and designed for safe, reliable operation over many years.
